>> we have warnings of high fire danger and now we have a number of fires burning in the north bay. one burned about 15 acres in yountville in napa county. two others reported in the knight's valley area west of calistoga. we have team coverage of the high fire danger this morning. anne makovec is in napa. cate caugiran is in martinez. lawrence karnow has more from the weather center. >> windy conditions making for high fire danger outside. we have more of a northerly component to the winds. that's that offshore wind and it's been whipping around the bay area. even this morning, we are seeing some gusts over 20 miles per hour in spots up in towards santa rosa and the wind advisory going to keep things a little brisk and looks like it is going to be blowing pretty good as we head throughout the good part of the morning. then things look to be settling down. now, the red flag warnings going to continue into the evening hours. in the north and the east bay hills, up into the diablo range, we are looking at

humidities less than 30% and you get those winds going and, of course, we haven't had much rain in the second half of the year so very dangerous fire conditions out there for today and, of course, we have already seen some of those fires already. temperatures right now because of the winds fairly warm this morning. 68 degrees right now in santa rosa. 68 in livermore. 66 in san jose and 69 in san francisco. i think as we head toward the afternoon today, average temperatures usually running in the 60s and also the 70s. today it is going to be way above the average. as much as 17 degrees above the average in livermore and 90 degrees. 89 in concord. and about 80 degrees in san francisco. i think it's going to get even hotter but the fire danger is actually going to be on the decrease. we'll talk more about that coming up. >> reporter: i'm over here in yountville in napa county right

now. there's smoke in the air and it has been very windy. let's take a look at some video that we shot just a few minutes ago. this is about a mile from where i'm standing right now in yountville. this is on silverado trail where a hillside is on fire. you can see it glowing orange and the wind is whipping that around. i just got an update from cal fire on the status of that fire. it is burning 50 acres now outside of yountville and it is 40% contained. they do expect to have it fully contained by 8:00. it started a couple of hours ago and they have been putting bulldozer lines around it to contain that fire they have a couple of engines standing by. this fire again about 50 acres right now. but on the napa-sonoma county line near knight's valley, it's by calistoga and geyserville.

there is a fire that's almost 150 acres right now. so several fires have been burned and smoke has been smelled all the way down to san francisco. they're not at full staffing levels right now because it's early in the wildfire season so they are doing what they can. they expect full containment on this fire in yountville by 8 a.m. anne makovec, kpix 5. the sweltering heat and low humidity are also major concerns in contra costa county where fire districts are dealing with budget cuts. cate caugiran has more from martinez. >> reporter: we're looking at -- well, one fire official mentioned this is pretty much the per storm concerning this fire season. we are looking at one of the earliest red flag warnings in years and also, contra costa county is dealing with this, a few empty stations here in this area. now, neighbors in the contra

costa county area are worried, will there be enough firefighters during this critical time? contra costa county fire protection district took pro- active measures in anticipation of the next couple of days. bulldozers were out earlier than normal trying to get fire trails built. firefighters are advising neighbors to take extra precautions, as well. >> they should very worried with the conditions that we're seeing right now. we suggest a 100-foot defensible space around your structure. >> now, the contra costa county fire protection district has been hit hard by budget cuts after a $75 a year parcel tax measure failed. four stations were shut down including 6 engines in the past year. and since then, firefighters have reported slower response times than normal. so that could be a bit of concern for neighbors and firefighters who are just trying to do their best job in the area. reporting live in martinez, back to you. >> thank you, cate. there is encouraging news,

though, for the east contra costa fire protection district. it's set to reopen its fire station in brentwood this morning. the station is one of three in the district that were closed in july after voters rejected a parcel tax measure. the re-opening was made possible by a federal grant. as fires and all that smoke up in napa i would imagine it's affecting traffic. >> especially west of the napa- sonoma county line just northwest of calistoga, knight's valley area that you heard anne makovec mention. that's where we're seeing one- way traffic control westbound 128 shut down by scott road and spencer lane. there's a tree down in the roadway. that tree may have hit some power lines in the area. so that's the issue. fire crews are blocking the area, as well. use 128 especially now it would be okay. but at 6:30 this morning for the next hour and a half they are giving for one-way traffic control in effect and hope to reopen lanes after that. we'll let you know as soon as

they do. in the meantime, also got some overnight roadwork still out there especially traveling westbound highway 237 the connector to southbound 880. right around where this camera is. that connector ramp is closed for another hour or show until 6:00 this morning. and outside we have a live look at the south bay a look at 101 near trimble exit. you can see everything is just fine this morning between santa clara and san jose. we'll have more traffic coming up. 5:06. developing news from the sierra foothills where a little girl was kidnapped over the weekend and another child was the victim of an attempted kidnapping. there was a memorial in valley springs last night for 8-year- old murder victim leila fowler. thousands shoulders up. she was stabbed to death in her home on saturday. her older brother broke down as he paid tribute to his little sister. >> i'm not saying good-bye to leila. i'm going to say, i'm going to see you later. [ crying ] >> there's no goodbyes. >> justin has a brand-new

tattoo to show his love for his little sister. investigators have still trying to identify her killer. investigators want to know if it could be this man. he was arrested in placerville yesterday. a mother there says he tried to kidnapped her toddler out of her arms. authorities say he is not a close match to the description of leila's killer. the family of one of the boston marathon bombing suspects may soon be able to pick up his body. 26-year-old tamerlin tsarnaev died after a gunfight with police. the massachusetts medical examiner has determined a cause of death but that information will not be released until his family has his remains and death certificate is filed. the suspect's widow agreed to release the body to his family. aaron hern is home in martinez this morning. he is celebrating his 12th birthday today after spending 10 days in a boston hospital for injuries from the marathon bombing. we expect to hear from the family tomorrow. aaron's doctors expect him to make a full recovery. 5:07.

a 50-year-old woman could make her first court appearance on thursday for attempting to poison starbucks customers. local pharmacist ramineh behbehanian concocted a lethal poison and mixed it into orange juice containers, allegedly. police say they then placed the juice into the display case inside the south san jose starbucks. >> she actually had a starbucks bag which in my mind tells me that she had planned this out. she actually brought the bag in with her probably to conceal the fact that she had something inside of it that was dangerous. >> it was a customer who noticed the suspicious behavior, reported it to an employee. they followed behbehanian and took down her license plate and police later arrested her. more bay area news. an elderly man is in critical condition after being attacked following a fender-bender in san francisco at a parking lot. this happened monday evening in the bayview near 3rd street and wallace avenue. after the accident, the suspect

punched the 74-year-old in the face, causing him to land on his head. witnesses say the suspect fled the scene in a black car. june 7th is the sentencing date for former santa clara county supervisor george george shirakawa, jr. he was not at the san jose hall of justice yesterday when the judge announced the date at a hearing. shirakawa resigned and pleaded guilty last month on charges of misusing public money and campaign donations. he will be sentenced three days after a special election is held to fill his seat. today is the first of may, may day traditionally a day of rallies and marches. bay area authorities hope for a more peaceful may day than last year. that's when "occupy" protestors clashed with police. marches and rallies are planned across the bay area starting at 3 p.m. the march in san francisco begins at 24th and mission street. in oakland fruitvale at east 12th, san jose our lady of

guadalupe church on east san antonio street. the death toll is now more than 400 after last week's collapse of a garment factory building in bangladesh. today thousands of protestors demonstrated in the capital city of dacha demanding safer working conditions in the country. they also called for the death penalty for the owner of the collapsed building. and newly posted video on youtube appears to show monday's deadly crash, incredible, of an american cargo plane in afghanistan. u.s. investigators are using the video now in its probe of the crash. the boeing 747 plunged shortly after take-off from bagram air force base killing all 7 american civilians on board. the plane was reportedly carrying military vehicles to the united arab emirates. coming up, why an energy drink company is suing san francisco. >> plus, bart going shabby chic. the filthy remnants and the cost to remove this macrame mess coming up. and a bad day at work.

away after his squad car ran into and apparently up the side of a utility pole. the department says the officer was trying to pull someone over when he made a quick turn, lost control of his car and hit the pole. the force of the accident pushed the car up the pole. but no one was injured. but up the pole, how do you do that? >> have you ever done that? >> no, thank goodness i haven't done that yet. >> yeah. >> usually you would think the car would crunch but it must have caught it just right. >> lots going on this morning. >> busy morning weather-wise. winds are kicking up. we just checked an observation over mount diablo with wind gusts at the top of the mountain there at 70 miles per hour. so it's blowing especially over the mountaintops down below fairly calm. but you can smell the smoke from the fires from the northerly wind. still out there now clear skies, some of the smoke in the skies. 69 in san francisco, 66 san jose, 68 santa rosa.

and 68 degrees in livermore. some of the areas are seeing gusty winds as well. cool temperatures at the coastline only in the 40s but 60s elsewhere and mostly clear skies. this afternoon hot again. likely see those temperatures soaring in the upper 80s, low 90s inland. we'll see a lot of 80s inside the bay and 70s out at the coastline with some sunshine. high pressure building in the bay area. we are looking at dry offshore winds. more of a northerly wind developing outside and that also brings with it some very low humidities and raises the fire danger. hotter days are head. temperaturessening to out in the mid-90s over the next couple of days. wind advisory in effect until 11:00. then on the computer models winds decrease especially toward the latter part of the day and then calm down towards the evening hours. looks like the worst this morning and things calm down and fire danger remains high. temperatures around the state into the 80s in the sacramento

valley, 82 in yosemite. around the bay today, 87 degrees in san jose. 86 in milpitas. 85 in san mateo. and about 76 in pacifica. east bay temperatures up in the 80s and also the low 90s. red flag warnings continue until 6:00 in the evening with high fire danger and very low humidity. 74 degrees the expected high in daly city. about 80 in san francisco. the next couple of days, we are going to continue to heat things up. over the weekend a few more clouds come our way. it's going to cool off a little bit over the weekend. let's check the roads with elizabeth. >> thank you, lawrence. let's go out towards the bay bridge. we don't have any wind advisories in any bridges. just a heads up slight delays getting into s the commute is beginning to pick up towards the dublin interchange. westbound 580 drive time up to 20 minutes out of the altamont pass. problem spots in napa and sonoma county, west of the

sonoma county line northwest of calistoga westbound 128 shut downright there by scott road and spencer lane. it's a big tree blocking the roadway. fire crews are also blocking ak sets. they are telling bus 6:30 this morning when they hope -- they're telling us about 6:30 this morning when they hope to have access to all lanes. if things back up, there is at trans valley road. use that as an alternate. a crash close to the racetrack westbound 37 west of skaggs island road so lanes may be blocked. a car hit a stalled pickup. that's now blocking lanes. chp heading to the scene not sure about injuries. we are not seeing big delays yet so far for the morning commute. we'll have more coming up. back to you guys. >> thank you. 5:17. the new 49ers stadium will be a little easier on the city's wallet. in fact a lot easier. officials will need to borrow less because interest rates have dropped. plus, fans have already forked over money for seat licenses decreasing the debt.

these new factors could save the 9ers and the city of santa clara around $90 million. monster beverage is suing san francisco city attorney dennis herrera saying he is being unfairly singled out. herrera requested the company to lower the caffeine content, provide an adequate warning label and stop marketing to minors. his requests came last year after the fda began looking into reports of deaths all linked to energy drinks. no doubt you have heard about the problems on the new bay bridge, mostly with those bad bolts but even before the bolt issue, the state set up a panel to make sure that the work caltrans did on the tower was adequate. the "sacramento bee" discovered five of the seven experts on the supposedly independent panel have or had financial and professional ties to caltrans, including this man, the panel's chairman, reginald desroches. the bee says he worked on research projects that caltrans

helped pay for including his doctoral dissertation at cal. desroches said if i felt i had a conflict, i wouldn't be on this panel. a piece of historic art inside a bart station has become an eyesore. bart paid an artist $50,000 for the hanging macrame back in 1976. today it is just covered in dust. commuters at the embarcadero are ready to part with it. >> i'm sure barbara would appreciate it where it was more visible and appreciated for what it is. >> bart tried to remove the art piece back in 1987 but left it for legal reasons. money is proposed in next year's budget to take it down. it will cost a lot 300 thousand dollars to get rid of it. why not just clean it? >> a lot money to take it down. 5:19.

>> your realtime captioner: linda marie macdonald. good morning. it's wednesday, may 1. i'm michelle griego. >> first day of may. >> hi, everyone. i'm frank mallicoat. it is 5:30. and right now, three fires are burning up in the north bay and if you open your window or step outside, probably smelled a little smoke. >> right. many people across the bay area even right here in san francisco have called our newsroom about it and so far, 50 acres have burned in yountville in napa county two other fires burning in the knight's valley area west of calistoga. at least 150 acres have burned. kpix 5 reporter anne makovec is in yountville this morning where high winds are fanning the flames. >> reporter: the smoke that people are smelling down to san francisco is coming from where i'm standing right now in yountville. i just got an update on three fires burning right now here in the north bay in the napa and sonoma county areas. going to show you some pictures of the fire burning here in

yountville. this one is just 50 acres. but i just found out more information about two fires burning in knight's valley and combined, they are taking up about 200 acres. now, that is near calistoga and geyserville. it is just below mount st. helena. 200 acres burning. the winds have been really driving that fire and downed power lines in the area as well, which may have been the cause of those two fires. no structures are threatened in that fire. but back to the fire that you're looking at now the one burning on silverado trail and oaklandville road in yountville, a barn burned there. the estimated damage is about 200 thousand dollars. no livestock in that barn. but a significant amount of damage there with 50 acres burning. it is now 40% contained. they have had bulldozers creating breaks around that fire all night and engines

standing by and they are expecting full containment on that fire by 8:00 this morning. no estimate on full containment of the knight's valley fire.lawrence har more information has more information on the winds. >> they have been whipping around in spots. i was just checking an observation north of calistoga looking at winds gusting to 30 miles per hour. so that is going to spread those fires pretty easily this morning. still, we have gusts otherwise over some of the mountaintops so wind advisory is up again this morning over the north to east bay hills, carquinez straits and the delta. fire dangers running high with low humidity making for fire

danger on the high side throughout the day today. winds keeping the temperatures mixed to 68 degrees in santa row 67 in san rafael and 66 in san jose. by the afternoon, we are looking at a hot day much above the average. usually we are in the 60s and the 70s. today we're going to be almost 20 degrees above average at 80 in san francisco. temperatures above average and getting hotter over the next couple of days. we'll have more on that coming up. >> thank you. the hot, dry conditions are also a major concern in contra costa county where fire districts are dealing with budget cuts. kpix 5's cate caugiran is in martinez this morning with more. cate. >> reporter: michelle, we're live at what used to be station 12 here in martinez. if you take a look, this was one of four stations shut down earlier this year and an example of the dilemma

firefighters are facing, high fire danger but low resources. firefighters in the contra costa county fire protection district say they have been on high alert over the past couple of days. this is one of the earliest red flag warnings they have had in years. bulldozers were busy getting 200 miles of fire trails ready. this fire season is early. so firefighters are working against time with limited staffing. >> response times are expected to increase. we simply don't have the same number of resources that we can put on the road that we had last fire season. >> reporter: firefighters are advising people who live in areas with lots of vegetation to keep a 100-foot defensible space around their homes. also, it's time to move that winter firewood so that it's not stacked against your house. roofs should be cleared of leaves and branches and keep your address visible for firefighters. here in contra costa county those fire stations close the

damage. could be out there for a little while longer blocking the left lane. chp is on scene. the fires burning up in parts of sonoma county. this is causing an issue especially on 128. now, we are getting word the westbound lanes remain closed for at least another hour or so between scott and spencer. one-way traffic control is in effect. so expect can slight delays in the area or use transvaally road as your alternate. mass transit all on time. quiet this morning. no delays behind the pay gates on the bay bridge. that's traffic. back to you guys. >> thank you. developing news from the sierra foothills, where investigators are searching for answers in the murder of a young girl. there was a memorial in valley springs last night for 8-year- old murder victim leila fowler. she was stabbed to death in her

the suspect's widow has agreed to release the body to his family. meantime the man who was carjacked by the bombing suspects spoke to cbs news about how he was able to escape. >> i just [ indiscernible ] >> now you're running. >> i was running as fast as i can. >> he ran across the street to another station then prompted the clerk to call 911 helping police track down the suspects. at his request cbs news is concealing his identity and has altered his voice. the bay area boy who was hurt in the boston bombings is back home in martinez this morning. and just in time, today is his 12th birthday. aaron hern spent 10 days in a boston hospital after he was wounded by shrapnel. his doctors expect him to make a full recovery. the next step is getting him back to school. we should hear from the family tomorrow. >> aaron said he wanted to wake up in his own bed on his

and up in parts of the north bay. more heat is only way. a heat advisory being issued tomorrow with hotter temperatures by the afternoon. so dry offshore winds continuing to blow and that's why you can smell the smoke that's starting in the north bay and spreading the smoke across the rest of the bay area. so out the door this morning, you may smell that as we have the fires burning now. hotter days are ahead as that ridge continues to build in overhead. the winds have been very strong especially in the hilltops. and then it looks like they will start to decrease toward the afternoon. then really beginning to calm down toward this evening and then overnight tonight so that will give firefighters an upper hand on catching up with the fires. today no weather delays related to sfo. across the country we are expecting partly cloudy skies 88 in houston. 43 with some rain possible as you head toward denver 84 degrees in chicago and 72 and sunny and bright in new york. around the bay today those temperatures soaring up to 87 in san jose. 75 in half moon bay. upper 80s some low 90s in many
